Some of the buildings across from the plant were gambling houses featuring innocent fronts but with entrances in the rear. They were of course illegal, but they were located on the Cicero side of the municipal boundaries, and the Cicero political machinery had been taken over by the Capone gang. The gambling houses were less than a hundred yards from the Cicero station of the "el" train and so attracted much of their clientele from neighboring Chicago.
