If you are familiar with modern history, you will know that towards the end of World War Two there was a sense of desperation from the Third Reich, having gone from what seemed like assured victory to fighting on their own soil after being pushed back by the Allied Forces. One of their desperate moves in this period was to develop the Volksjager, which means 'The People's Fighter'. Heinkel's engineers knew that they did not have much time and so set to work developing a fighter that could be put together quickly and at a low cost, with the idea that children as young as fifteen (in the Hitler Youth) could be trained to fly them.
