Welcome to the April issue of RC Model World. I recently treated myself to a new desk at home, and whilst unpacking the flat pack that it came in, I couldn't help but notice the faint but familiar smell of hot wire cut foam (used as packaging) and the wood veneer used to skin the desk's parts. The combination of both was a fleeting reminder of my early days in R/C aeromodelling, when nearly all kits came with obechi veneered foam wing panels. Whilst I sat back to let the faint odour waft around me (no, not that odour - the wood and veneer!), it allowed me to pause for thought on how sterile, smell wise, the hobby of aeromodelling has become. In fact there's precious little smell at all these days - LiPo's don't kick up (unless something has gone badly wrong!), moulded foam airframes lack any olfactory stimulation, whilst modern glues are, quite literally, not to be sniffed at.
