摘要

Before WW2 model aircraft engines were 2-stroke designs run on petrol and with spark ignition systems powered by a battery. The models were free flight and had to be quite large to be able to carry the weight of the engine and ignition unit. There was a resurgence of modelling following the war. In the USA, Ray Arden, a very active modeller and model engine designer, was experimenting with the potentially more powerful fuels, including methanol and nitromethane that had become available. When he experienced an engine that continued running without the spark he realised that platinum would act as a catalyst to produce a heat source with methanol-based fuels.
