The Fairey Long-Range Monoplane, from the early 1930s, is a favourite subject of mine. And a model of it was my first essay into electric powered scale models back in 1982. I believe it was also the first serious British scale model to be electric-powered. I had built a 3/4 scale 61" span glow-powered model, drastically over-powered by a venerable OS Max-H .40, which flew successfully. I was persuaded to try an electric version, which was powered by a geared MFA Hummingbird 20 motor and eight 1000 mAh sub-C Saft cells mounted in the wing. To my surprise the model performed very well and I am sure it would have taken off from the ground successfully if I had tried it. However, at the time, my confidence in electric power was insufficient to give it a go. So I will never know now!
