After previewing the mighty new Laser 155 in the July issue, we passed the engine over to local modeller, John Lewnes, who was tasked with assembling the Mentor-G engine test model. Being aware that the fuel tank position was quite critical (within 1.5 cm of the carburettor depending on the type of airframe; for something aerobatic it needs to be in-line due to attitude/fuel head changes), John Harper from Laser tried various engine locations, including upright (tank okay but thrust-line too low) and inverted (thrust-line okay but tank too high). As the Mentor has an open engine area, Jon Harper from Laser recommended a sidewinder set up, so this was the final position for our engine. This has the benefit that the carb sits relatively close to the engine's thrust-line instead of being way above or below, making tank positioning much easier. Even so we had to drop the Mentor's tank platform by another couple of centimetres to make sure it was not sitting too high above the carb.
