摘要

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have been around since the early 1960s. But the early LEDs could only output red light at low intensities. I remember these being used in the first electronic calculators and watches in the 1970s. Developments in the 1990s increased the intensity and generated bright white and other colour LEDs. These are being increasingly used for high efficiency lighting as an LED can output four times the amount of light than the older incandescent bulbs, as well as having a much greater lifespan. So what does this have to do with modellers, you may ask? Well, as LEDs are now being widely used they are not only cheaper and more readily available but they make an ideal candidate for simulating full sized aircraft lighting systems in a lightweight package on our latest scale masterpiece. Or they can be used just to allow us to show off in the dark!
