This year sees the anniversary of several major aviation events in history, and this history is where aeromodelling originated. We celebrate 100 years of British Aviation, without which our weekends would be quite dull! Aviation has come a long way in its relatively short period in time. We recall from our history books the initial heavier than air flying machine designs by the Italian inventor and engineer (and painter!) Leonardo Da Vinci way back in 1488. Many people said then that it was unnatural for man to fly, and it was not until 1903 when the Wright Brothers proved to everybody it could be done by more than just man-power. Since then things have progressed very quickly in a very short time. Within the first 70 years of powered flight the first wooden airframes held together with wires and linen we saw aerial warfare over northern Europe, progressing quickly to metal airframes and passenger carrying air services that would soon shrink the globe to within a 24 hour flight to the far side of the world in 300-tonne airliners.
