Last month I described how the design problems that I was having with the wings and fuselage were solved. There were still one or two items to sort out and tidy up but things were looking up. I have not mentioned the tail unit in the article because I have not had any real problems in this area. My preferred method of constructing the tail plane, elevator, fin and rudder on my scale models is to use the core method of construction if possible. To re-cap on this construction technique, a sheet balsa wood core, cut to the shape of the item is used with the spars, ribs and outline glued to each side. On the Waco there was a small complication as most of the outlines were rounded. A few years ago this problem was overcome by making the outline from sheet balsa pieces cut to shape and glued in place, see sketch. I have found that it is possible, with the judicious use of quick drying cyano that the outlines can be made up very easily using laminations of thin balsa sheet.
