The evolution of the aircraft as a viable entity is astonishing for the speed of engineering innovation. From experimental balloon flights to the carefully planned experiments of Sir George Cayley who designed the first aerfoil section propeller and sent his footman across the Brampton Dale in 1853 in a glider. He also dreamt up an engine for aerial use using gunpowder for ignition! Such forward adventurous thinking was going on worldwide and the Wright Brothers finally managed powered flight based on their successful canard glider designs, in 1903.
