The Yak-18 first flew in 1946 as a two-seater with a 5-cylin-der radial engine and a retracting tail-dragger u/c. Later it acquired a 7-cylinder radial and became the standard trainer for not just Russia but many countries including China where it is still in use today. The majority were two-seaters with a tricycle u/c. It was the 300-hp single-seater tail-dragger that dominated the world aerobatic competitions and it is this one I've chosen to model. In 1966 the Yak-18PM (trike) took the top 4 places in the men's and women's World Aerobatic classes The PS (taildragger) version repeated this success in 1976, 78 and '82. I'm reminded of the pilot of one of these modern small aerobatic planes at an airshow who said that cross country he flew upside down because that way he could trim it out to fly hands off! His plane was low wing, no dihedral.
