Work on the Cub has been slow but the undercarriage is now fitted in place. As I mentioned previously the model is quite small at 1:6 scale and there is no need to make the undercarriage a working unit. One of the basic skills needed in aeromodelling is that of wire bending. It is however a difficult skill to master and many of us do have problems with it. To make things easier in this area I have used brass tube as wire joiners and for adjustment. Soldered joints are regularly used during the construction of model aircraft and it is most important that all these joints are clean before soldering commences. Clean up the wire or tube with old sandpaper and files and use fine un-lacquered copper wire for the bound joints. I have always used Fluxite as a flux when soft soldering and have never had a problem, but please use what you are familiar with. The first piece of wire to bend on the Cub undercarriage is the front piece that carries the wheels. This wire is housed in a hardwood channel and it is important to get the length of each leg the same. It is not as important to get the width across the fuselage correct as we can cheat here and make the unit in two pieces joined with brass tube but it is really best to try and bend the wire accurately. The rear wires again need to be bent accurately but it is difficult with such an acute angle.
