One of the small but brave Hobbits in 'The Lord of the Rings' is called Pippin, and when designing the aeroplane I had just seen 'Return of the King', so it seemed appropriate for a cute but effective model. As this model was intended for electric power all parts are built up for lightness, using balsa wood unless otherwise stated. The Tall Start with the tail, which is very simple so let's get it out of the way. Cut some 1/4" x 1/8" balsa strip and make 6 tailplane ribs from it. Then cut some 1/2" wide strips of 1/16" sheet and pin down two of the latter as the bottom of the tailplane leading (LE) and trailing edges (TE). Add the 1/16" sheet in the centre and then add the 1/4" x 1/8" pieces and ribs. Finish by adding the top 1/2" x 1/16" strips, the 1/16" centre sheet, and the tip pieces. Round off the LE and tips and square off the TE with a sanding block. The elevator is a piece of 1" x 1/4" TE stock, or 1/4" sheet, with a sharp Vee on the LE. Fit hinges on the centreline, or shape it for top hinging with Diamond tape if you prefer. The fin and rudder are simply cut from 1/8" sheet balsa.
