I think that we all get quite a kick out of the first flight of a new model. When it is a new design then this kick is even greater. Earlier in the year, in June to be precise, I test flew two new models within a few weeks. The first was a radial-engined version of the Avro 625 Avian Monoplane and the second an Aeronca C3. Both the models were to 1:4 scale and both were fitted with working flying wires using the well-known Mick Reeves system of fork ends and flat steel wire, more about this later. The Avian Monoplane has a wingspan of 90 inches and weighs just over 14 lb. It is fitted with a Laser 150 mounted in an inverted position. The Aeronca is 108" span and its weight is 12 lb. Again an inverted Laser four-stroke powers this model but this time it is a Laser 120. The model was originally fitted with an OS Gemini 120 flat-twin but this engine did not look like the full-size Aeronca E113 engine and I just could not hide the carburettor so out it came and in went the short in height Laser 120.
