For decades, operators have relied on the Mk XII, the Mode 4 system's complex coding scheme, to provide this Special Identification Feature (SIF) as an add-on to regular IFF. Now, a more robust, more secure system has become necessary. De-certification of Mode 4 by the National Security Agency (NSA) was the final straw. When that happened, it became clear that a replacement was needed that took advantage of the latest coding technology to protect the system from new intrusion methods.
