摘要

The radiation risk to the patients undergoing X ray examinations and the collective radiation risk to the population may be characterised by the dosimetry quantity, effective dose (E). In this study, a mathematical phantom, similar to the MIRD phantom, is modelled with modifications and a few additional organs. The dimensions of the organs having MIRD specifications are altered to arrive at a phantom representing an average Indian adult. Values of effective doses and organ doses normalised to air kerma at FSD are computed for the common chest X ray examinations using the Monte Carlo code MCNP (Version 3.1). It is found that the normalised doses are higher for an average Indian adult than that for the MIRD phantom because of the Smaller build of the average Indian. The normalised effective dose for a female is considerably higher than for a male. The Mathematical Indian Reference Man phantom is also described.
