As part of a quality control programme in diagnostic radiology, automatic exposure systems in general radiography and mammography have been checked over the years 1996 to 1998. Thue optical density has been measured of films of standard phantoms exposed under normal clinicail conditions, representative of the mean density of clinical films. Approximately 100 general diagnostic systems and 28 mammographic systems, responsible for approximately 1,000,000 patient examinations, were involved.
