A transient current pulse propagating on a semi-infinite wire above ground is considered. A quasi-transverse electromagnetic approximation to the modal equation for the propagation wave number is used to obtain the time history of the pulse on the wire. Pulse amplitude decay and degradation of rise time as a function of distance along the wire are demonstrated. The classical Sommerfeld expressions for the field of an infinitesimal horizontal current element over ground are integrated over the wire to give the frequency domain fields. Saddle point integration techniques yield the far-zone fields in closed form for polar angles away from grazing. A numerical inverse Fourier transform yields the transient response. Representative results for the far-zone fields in the frequency and time domains are presented.
