Radio 1 will celebrate its 50th anniversary on 30 September 2017. To my knowledge, this book, by former Radio 1 and Radio 2 presenter David Hamilton (b. 1938), is the only publication to mark this important event. Hamilton has chosen to cover the period from 1967 to 1973 - the 'golden days'. This was when Radio 1 reached out to the whole country, broadcasting pop music all day long without real competition. From 1973 onwards, legal commercial stations began to roll out across the UK and Radio 1 no longer had the monopoly on pop music broadcasting. The Radio 1 presenters of that period were household names, especially those who also hosted the television chart show Top of the Pops.
