The programme content of local and community radio stations can vary enormously but, at its best, it can engender a great sense of belonging and an invaluable public service. I was fortunate to hear several exemplars of such stations during my recent road trip in western Canada. Some of these were stations that started off as medium wave outlets but, like most stations in North America, they subsequently moved to FM and online.
