摘要

As regular readers will know, I enjoy construction projects with a particular accent on hacking ready-made development boards. One of the buzzwords that has been around for a while is the Internet of Things (IoT) and most of the semiconductor manufacturers are bringing out a string of IoT-related products in an attempt to grab a share of the market. From a home constructor's viewpoint, most of the development boards are just excessively expensive. Generally, anything with Wi-Fi seems to start at £20 and go up from there. While £20 might not seem much to some people, you often need multiple boards to support a solution and you can easily end up spending a £100 or more. The one chink of light has been the Espressif ESP8266 Wi-Fi System on a Chip (SoC) module that is available for as little as £2.50 on eBay. I originally covered this back in February 2015. However, things have moved on since then. This excellent device is usually supplied ready mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB), complete with a reference clock and a small Wi-Fi antenna (Fig. 1). In addition to featuring a Wi-Fi transceiver and internet protocol and transmission control protocol (IP/TCP) stack, the ESP8266 has an 80MHz microcontroller with a number of input and output lines that can be programmed to interface with the outside world. For £2.50, this is a pretty impressive device and it has, unsurprisingly, become very popular. The main problem when it was first released was a lack of documentation, which made it extremely difficult to use. The limited documentation that was available was in Chinese, so not very helpful to us in the UK. However, over the past 12 months, many bright and generous folk in the open-source community have been working away to unravel the finer points of the ESP8266 and develop easy ways to use it as the basis for loT projects. The ESP8266 is now supplied in a number of different board layouts, which I summarise in Table. 1. In addition, SparkFun and Adafruit in the US and Olimex in Bulgaria have produced even friendlier versions of the ESP8266 that make them very easy to incorporate into a project.
