As I write this column in the middle of January, I am reminded of the loss of the cruise ship Costa Concordia around this time last year with its tragic loss of life. I am even more mindful of another disaster that happened 60 years ago in UK waters; the sinking of the Princess Victoria (a British Railways ferry) and the subsequent loss of 135 lives, including that of Northern Ireland's deputy Prime Minister. Only 44 of those on board survived. In many respects, it was fortunate that there were only 128 passengers and 51 crew on board because the ferry was capable of carrying 1,500 passengers.
