In the past, I've mentioned that many non-directional beacons (NDB) across Europe and North America will close by 2015. These are mainly beacons used for en route navigation. However, I expect that lower powered locator NDBs at airports will remain operational for some years to come. Many NDBs have already closed across Europe and North America as part of this rationalisation and I recently learnt that Australia is now following suit. In a recent statement similar to those previously issued in Europe and North America, retention of the existing ground based system would require Airservices Australia to invest in replacement and upgraded equipment, in order to meet Australia's requirement for navigation of instrument flight rules aircraft. Approximately 200 installations, mainly NDBs and VHF omnidirectional radio ranges (VOR), are mostly at end-of-life, do not have spare parts support by manufacturers and are difficult and expensive to maintain.
