The encryption techniques used today are well beyond the scope of this series but there is a simple system you might encounter - bit inversion. The technique involves the inversion of one or more bits in the transmitted signal. I've shown a simple example in Fig. 1, where the second bit is inverted. In more advanced bit inversion systems, a number of bits will be changed. Some of the more advanced decoding systems (for example, the WAVECOM W-CODE) include bit inversion settings, so the monitoring station can experiment with different combinations until the signal clarifies. Bit inversion is usually only to be found used on radio teletype (RTTY) type links, so it is fairly rare these days.
