Any short wave listener will tell you that HF is a difficult communications medium at the best of times. Think how this affects safety-critical air-ground links over remote areas. The nearest such area to us in the UK is the North Atlantic andrnthere, commercial flights stick to their allocated track, altitude changes are co-ordinated through the controller and aircraft are spaced apart at safe intervals when on the same track and at the same altitude.
