Bill Robertson brings you a mixed bag this month - everything from video and data signals from space to hot air balloon, microlight and hang glider frequencies, the National Emergency Channel, TRBO, a simpler Bearcat manual and lots of Essex frequencies.rnLast month I gave you an insight into the range of line of sight radio siganls and how buildings and the like can reduce this range.rnHowever, if there are no obstructions in the way and the path is truly line of sight, for example, from the portable scanner in your hand to an aircraft flying at an altitude of, say, 33,000ft, you will be able to receive VHF transmissions from the aircraft at a distance of up torn200 miles away. On the other hand, you won't be able to hear the ground-based transmissions from the control tower communicating with the aircraft unless you are within 15-20 miles of it. This is why you'll often hear high-level aircraft in communication with ground-based control towers some distance away from you but not the transmissions from the controllers in the towers back to the aircraft.
