Flight number EZY7041 departed around 0730 on a foggy November morning. The Airbus A319 has a surprisingly roomy flight deck compared with the Boeing 737. The jump seat is behind and between the pilots but, unlike the 737, does not entirely block the entrance door. The use of sidesticks like those on computer games allows a small table to be slid out in front of each pilot. Pre-flight data input, including weight and balance, is done on a laptop plugged into the aircraft's Flight Management Computer (FMC). After pushing back and starting engines on Liverpool's east apron, we taxied slowly to holding point Alpha One for a Runway 27 departure. By this time, the fog had cleared enough for about half the length of the runway to be visible as we entered it.
