Conceived in 1998, the same year as the first Rail Business Awards, and born two years later in the first year of the new millennium, the IRO is a relatively young professional body.rnHowever, in just a few years it has achieved many of the aims on which it was founded, principally the establishment of a comprehensive education programme and a set of academically accredited qualifications. Chris Daughton, the Institution of Railway Operators' (IRO) chief executive, says: 'From the outset, the intention of the IRO's founding members was to provide the means whereby railway operators could obtain professional qualifications. Sponsoring the Young Professional of the Year Award is a natural and logical progression of that aim.
