One of the factors limiting the use of rail for freight transport between China and Europe is the attitude of the Chinese Government to the carriage of what are defined as hazardous consignments. These include Lithium based batteries, of the type used in electric cars. Over the past few years the government has been lobbied by various railfreight concerns, including DB Schenker and BTE, requesting a change in the legislation. Both DB Schenker and BTE are certain that the hazardous goods restrictions will be lifted by the fourth quarter of 2019. Over the past decade the Chinese Government has invested close on 60 billion USD in developing its electric road vehicle industry, and plans to invest a similar sum over the coming decade.
