摘要

Berlin's regional express ("S-Bahn") system is operated by a 100% subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn. This network, along with the metro ("U-Bahn") forms the backbone of public transport in the German capital. The regional network has a total length of 328 km, and its 14 lines serve 164 stations. In the past, the political division of the city led to the closure of a considerable part of the original lines, but more than 84 km of track have been reactivated since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The technical and financial basis for this work is a special programme for the thorough renewal of the S-Bahn in Berlin, which has led to more than 1.9 billion euros being invested in permanent-way measures since 1990. This report deals with the current status, experience to date and tasks for the future.
