This month, my column is being written from a marsh just south of Rugby, N.D. Many of you are familiar with this area since the BNSF runs through Rugby and Canadian Pacific runs just south of here through Harvey. There is a lot of activity in North Dakota this time of year with what appears to be an excellent crop already at the elevators, in temporary storage and still in the field. This is great news for the farmers with commodity prices in good shape and for the railroads that will have the opportunity to move this bounty to the markets. By the way, the duck hunting was very good this year, although with the temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s the weather may have been more conducive to a fishing trip. At times, the mosquitoes outnumbered the ducks, but I can assure you I'm not complaining. If you're a hunter, you will understand that the long drive home with good friends was spent discussing plans for next year's excursion to the prairie potholes.
