Back in medieval times when I went to college, the policy at the University of Illinois was to admit almost anyone who graduated from a high school within the state. Academic standards were high, so freshman classes shrank very quickly. At many orientation sessions, a person on stage would say: "Look to your left and look to your right. Only one of the three of you will still be here at graduation time." With about two-thirds of every incoming freshman class not making the cut, those words were more than a simple scare tactic.
