In May 1991, Subcommittee 8, Track Geometry of AREMA Committee 5-Track was asked to review section 3.6 of Chapter 5 of the AREMA Manual that relates to vertical curves. The request to AREMA came from tran-sits who found the existing formula too onerous and from Class 1 railways, who were at that time undercutting at overhead structures in order to increase clearances to accommodate double-stack container trains. It was felt that the existing formula gave vertical curve lengths far in excess of what they practically should be.
