I liked Michael Desmond's comments in his Desmond File Blog, '2009: What's Next for Developers?' about developers taking the time to learn new skills while out of work during the recession. I've been thinking along similar lines myself these last few months. I am way down in New Zealand and our industry has shrunk tremendously recently, despite us being somewhat insulated from the U.S. and European markets. I believe that this downtime will mean developers can finally pursue all those custom applications they've been mulling over for the last year, but have been too busy to actually develop. I see the next year providing an unusually high amount of high-quality software from these developers.
