摘要

When I was 17 years old and graduating from Collinwood High School in Cleveland, I lucked out big time and won a 10-day, first-class tour of Europe, thanks to Boeing Co. What got me the trip and the accompanying college scholarship was my entry in an essay competition on the topic "Foreign Languages: Jet Age Tools to World Peace." I argued that learning other languages helped one to see things from multiple cultural perspectives and thus more objectively. It seemed to me that it was a good way to escape, at least partly, from the habits, assumptions and limitations that all human beings typically grow C#, Visual Studio and .NET to get the job done.
