The Encyclopedia of Black Comics carries a Foreword by Henry Louis Gates, Jr, an Introduction by the author Sheena C Howard and an Afterword by Christopher Priest. Henry Louis Gates, Jr, is the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor of the W.E.B Du Bois Institute for African American Studies at Harvard University, also a renowned author and documentarian. In the Foreword, Gates gives the reader a brief highlight of the rich history of African American comics and what will be forthcoming in the Encyclopedia of Black Comics. The Encyclopedia details 106 biographies, one-third are African American women and other leading figures in the Black comics industry from the early twentieth century to today (p. viii). By reading this Foreword by Gates, a new researcher on the subject can obtain a good foundation of black comics.
