摘要

Most medical activities are physician led. There are innumerable other health-related professions, some of which may play a greater role in the actual healing process - nurses obviously, pharmacists, physiotherapists, clinical psychologists, lab assistants, psychotherapists, etc. - and the primary diagnosis and therefore the basis of the medical record comes from doctors. Doctors are increasingly under pressure and are therefore increasingly hurried. It is also an unfortunate fact that doctors are extraordinarily bad at communicating: one of my very first experiences as a newly joined public library assistant was dealing with an enquirer asking "The doctor says my little boy has got something called autism. What is it, and are there any books about curing it at home?" Rather a challenge for a new assistant.
