摘要

We can all remember books that changed our lives - perhaps it was Jane Eyre or Catch-22, The Shock of the New or Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Book publicity encourages us to think that we shall never be the same after reading - a book about the Holocaust, a historical romance, a book written by a Man Booker winner, a bookclub bestseller, a film tie-in. Books will change your life forever, give you a new way of thinking and make you laugh and cry. C.S. Lewis suggests that we are very protective of the books we enjoyed as children (like The Wind in the Willows or Black Beauty), as they stay affectionately in the memory, and we can easily be upset when they are attacked.
