Creating a comprehensive text for a subject as broad as ancient battles is a daunting task; one would expect such a publication to take up shelves worth of space. Such size would make it difficult for libraries to add to their collections, yet Henry Sidebottom and Michael Whitby have found a way to cover this topic within three volumes without sacrificing the quality of the information. Each entry is written in such a way that makes it highly readable and informative for both academic and lay audiences. It is impressive how consistent each entry is in quality. This is not surprising, considering that Henry Sidebottom is a world-renowned historian on Ancient History at Lincoln College in Oxford, whereas Michael Whitby is an accomplished ancient historian at the University of Birmingham. The contributing authors are experts from around the world; each entry itself reads like it was written by specialist in that particular topic. While the price tag could be a deterrent for some libraries and educators, having a single copy on reserve would be an excellent addition to any collection. For libraries lacking space, this text is also available in digital format.
