Originally, almost all medicine was herbal, and there are still strong traditions of herbal medicine amongst non-Western communities. This book begins within introduction to the medical use of plants, some examples of herbs for particular body systems and an overview of the various chemical classes of active ingredients. Then there is an important page on quality control of herbal products. This is followed by a history of herbal medicine from its origins to the end of the nineteenth century. This covers the shift from a magical or spiritual view of medicine to one based on the perceived effectiveness of products. The shift from Galen to Paracelsus is described. These changes lead to a rational use of herbal products. From about 1850, there was a strong attempt, often successful, by professional doctors to prohibit herbal medicine. Its history in the twentieth century is about rediscovery and renewed acceptance and legality of herbal products. The history and use of herbal medicine is then retold for various regions of the world. This introduces non-Western medical systems, in particular, those of India and China, but the less documented traditions of Africa and America are also discussed. In regions where the indigenous population were killed by Old World diseases, much knowledge was lost, but attempts are being made to rediscover traditional herbal medicine and even find new useful herbs in the indigenous flora.
