The recent history of the world's most populous country requires a correspondingly large volume to analyse it: this one has about 430 articles (the statement on the back cover that there are 700 appears to include the cross-references), but it is notable that these are, on the whole, considerably longer than the average for the series: some comprise as many as 6,000 words and few less than 200. They seem also to include a larger percentage than usual of general subjects, and, besides the normal categories of persons, places, organizations and events, we can also find articles devoted to policies, campaigns and even slogans. The previous edition appeared in 2007 (RR 2008/241), and many articles have been updated accordingly; the text covers events up to the end of 2015.
