This title is another addition to the reliable Oxford Handbooks series and once again Oxford University Press has published a library staple. This title possesses all the indicators of a resource which becomes "core collection" for university or college libraries supporting English literature programmes. It should also be seriously considered as an excellent addition to the stock of public libraries supporting a poetry collection. So having endorsed this volume, what makes it stand out? As with The Oxford Handbook of Contemporary British & Irish Poetry (Robinson, 2013) which I reviewed some time ago (RR 2015/017), this Handbook distinguishes itself through its coverage, presentation and writing style. The tone, approach and language of The Oxford Handbook of British Poetry, 1660-1800 ensures that an area of poetry which might seem daunting for its associations or the historical nature of the poetries under discussion becomes approachable. The period covered is the era which includes Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope and Samuel Johnson, to name but three, and those names alone are enough to entice or repel. Ideally, a resource presenting an overview of British poetry from around 1660 to 1800, understandably with a little overspill on either side of those dates, should be accessible to the widest possible readership. This Handbook achieves this with style.
