With family vacations, as a child, any trip to another state was preceded with a stop to the visitor's center, those ubiquitous information depots awash with glossy pamphlets cascading from the walls, tantalizing tourists with full color photos and eye-catching promotions. These were the pamphlets of my youth - a far cry from the pamphlets found in the Readex's American Pamphlets collection. With over 25,000 pamphlets available, dating from 1820 through 1922, the New York Historical Society, in collaboration with Readex, a division of NewsBank, has unleashed a wealth of information that covers a multitude of topics. From the Cuban Revolution to rum to embroidery, the subjects are varied and provide a unique snapshot of contemporary societal thoughts and concerns. There are no glossy photos or bargain promotions in these pamphlets. For example, one entitled The Opium Habit discusses the merits of using the common oat as a way to fight opiate addiction. Another one, written in 1,879, discusses the causes of communism under the nom de plume, meaning an average citizen. With the ability to print for the price of pennies, pamphlets were ubiquitous in the nineteenth century and helped spread ideas through the masses.
