摘要

Living where earthquakes happen, one learns to look for safe doorways, sturdy desks and at the structures that are around them. What is not often thought of is the engineering behind the structures. This encyclopedia looks at structural engineering as it relates to earthquakes and seismic activity from modern world applications to modeling and analysis of natural and ancient structures. With depth and clarity in explanation, most entries are thorough, yet at a level the average undergraduate (in engineering, physics or similar) would understand. Most entries contain detailed images, diagrams and equations with step by step explanations. An example of this is the detail in the building panel entry. Diagrams of different materials are compared with pictures of actual building walls to give a detailed overview accessible to both the construction foreman and the structural engineer.
