The publisher Dorling Kindersley, a part of Penguin Random House, is well-known for its lavishly illustrated and distinctive range of popular books. Many of these are intended either for children or the tourist, the Eyewitness Travel Guides series are the best-known example in the latter category, but the publisher also produces a few titles of library reference value. Given Dorling Kindersley has built its business and reputation on producing highly illustrated books, it is perhaps not surprising that atlases feature in its range of publications. A quick trawl through the company's website will net a number of world atlases, all of which seem to be variant versions of the Complete World Adas, here under review. These include the tenth edition of the Reference World Adas (ISBN 978 1 4093 7639 2) at £25, the seventh edition of the Concise World Adas (ISBN 978 02412 2634 6) at £17.99 and two cheaper offerings, an Essential World Adas (ISBN 978 1 4093 6609 6) and a Student World Atlas (ISBN 978 0 2411 9914 5), both priced at £10.99. The Complete Atlas of the World would, therefore, appear to be the top of the publisher's current atlas range. According to the verso of the title page, it was first published in 2007, reprinted with revisions in 2009 and issued as a second edition in 2012. All editions, including this third, have the same pagination, so one assumes each "edition" is primarily an updating rather than a reworking. Interestingly, Dorling Kindersley's website does not appear to list another of the company's atlases, the larger and more expensive Great World Atlas last released in a fifth edition in 2008 and priced at £75. Previously considered in these columns (RR 2009/341), we will make brief further mentions of this title and how it compares with the Complete Adas of the World, later in this review.
