The 101 Most Unusual Diseases and Disorders is the most recent work of Dr Evelyn Kelly, a writer and professor responsible for over 400 articles and 17 books on a variety of medical, health and education topics. Intended for a lay audience, this work is a fascinating peek into the afflictions of humanity. Diseases chosen for inclusion were selected due to some uniqueness not just on rarity. Kelly states in the introduction, "I have tried to choose some of the most unusual diseases, not just because they are unknown, but because they have in interesting or unusual component to them" (p. xiii). Indeed, poison ivy is covered, not because it is rare (the entry itself notes that over 350,000 people annually are affected in the United States) but because of its unusual means of transmission, through urushiol, an oil produced by the plant. Diseases included range from the common, if unusual in some respect, for example, poison ivy and frostbite to afflictions that are rare but famous for some reason, for example, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (aka ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease) to some that you may never have heard of such as uncombable hair syndrome and Diogenes syndrome.
