摘要

Race, ethnicity and nationalism account for much of the diversity in human affairs - but not all of it. There are other major sources of division such as religion and social class. We might also include factors such as ideological conflict and the scramble for economic spoils. This multi-dimensional view allows us to "locate" persons, events and movements with some precision. Taken together they permit us to articulate a rational view of society to organize a world picture based, partly at least, on nation states and to provide a sensible narrative of events. If all that sounds high-falutin, let us simply say that these concepts enable us to determine who we are, where we belong and our purpose in life.
