All those years ago sitting in the school library and consulting the volume of The Oxford Classical Dictionary (OCD). I could hardly, even in my wildest science-fiction dreams (not that I would ever daydream in the school library of course), have imagined some kind of system whereby the pushing of various buttons would bring up the text on a screen. What has actually transpired today, of course - and heaven knows where it will all end - is in some ways even more extraordinary: not just the one standard reference book on a screen but countless others in parallel, as well as online access to complete Latin and Greek texts across the whole range from ancient to mediaeval (and modern). In previous reviews of the printed volumes (RR 2012/345 for review of 4th ed.), I have indicated how important the OCD was to my school and undergraduate studies, so is this new and inevitable development a brave new world or a sad end of a favourite book?
