The war in Korea lasted from the middle of 1950 to mid-1953 - three years and one month. On that 600 mile peninsula, up to 4.1 million people were dead, wounded or missing when the fighting stopped, the civilian numbers exceeding the military in the ratio 5:4. It was fought in the extremes of climate, intense "heat in summer, freezing conditions in winter. Whilst South and North Korean forces were at the centre of the fighting, the war had been internationalised from the word go: first by America, Britain and other United Nations (UN) powers; on the other side, by Russia and, after October 1950, by the Communist Chinese. When it ended, the border between north and south stood roughly where it had been three years earlier, and there it has remained.
