摘要

In recent years, Princeton University Press has published a wide range of books on the natural world. Somewhat surprisingly for an American university press, a significant number of these relate to the British Isles and many are aimed mainly at a general, rather than a specialist academic, audience. A notable example recently reviewed in these columns is the Crossley ID Guide: Britain and Ireland (Crossley and Couzens, 2014) (RR 2014/101), a bird watching identification book that uses digitally enhanced photographs to depict birds in their natural habitats. A number of Princeton's books on wildlife, including some of those relating to the British Isles, have been published under the WILD Guides series branding. WILD Guides appears to be a small British company specialising in the production of this type of book for Princeton University Press. In our last issue, we reviewed their revision of Britain's Dragonflies (Smallshire and Swash, 2014) (RR 2015/143) and have reviews of two similar titles on butterflies and hoverflies in the pipeline. Two of the four authors of the title here reviewed are WILD Guides staff. On the back cover blurb, Robert Still is described as "cofounder", while Andy Swash is stated to be "managing director". The other two authors, Sophie Lake and Durwyn Liley, are "professional ecologists" who work for what seems to be a closely related consultancy company Footprint Ecology. At this point, I find it hard not to digress and make the perhaps gratuitous observation that Lake and Liley, as so often seems to be the case, have names that are perfectly appropriate to their occupation and to the book they have part authored. Lakes are habitats that feature prominently in the Freshwaters section of this book, while Durwyn Liley would seem a good name for a rare wild plant, perhaps one growing in some rocky mountain ledge in Snowdonia.
